Conversations

Vivi and I had two memorable conversations this morning. The first was while she was standing on our loveseat and throwing her play food onto our other couch. We were yelling between a couple of rooms.

Vivi: Mama, come watch me throw my ice cream real hard.
Me: Just a minute V, I have to use the potty.
Vivi: Mooooooom, are you going pee or poop?
Me: I'm going pee. I'll be right out.
Vivi: Do you want your privacy?
Me: Yes, please.

10 seconds of silence...

Vivi: Mooooooom, are you sure you going only pee?
Me: Yes!

By the time I got out of the bathroom a whole 20 seconds after I first went in, she was done throwing the food and was camped outside the bathroom door wanting to know if I had washed my hands. The irony of all this is that we have these conversations ten times a day except I am usually the inquisitor. I think I shall give her more space in the future now that I realize how truly annoying the questioning is!

Our second conversation was while I was cutting vegetables for soup and she was eating them.

Vivi: Hey mom, I love you.
Me: Oh Vivi, I love you too... more than all the stars in the sky.
Vivi: Mom, I love you more than two whole thing clementines.

In our world, that is WAY better than all the stars in the sky!

    What a sweetheart! Happy New Year! How many months pregnant are you? Have they told you yet that twins develop more quickly than singletons, so they are considered "ready" 2 - 4 weeks earlier than the 40 weeks which is the standard? I just thought of that as a good fact to know so that you can be prepared. I hope you already knew this, so my information-sharing isn't causing a panic! Anyway, hope your pregnancy is going well!

    Thanks! I'm just starting my 31st week and still feeling really good so I'm optimistic that I can go until 36 weeks, if not longer. My due date is March 9 but we are hoping to have everything together and ready by mid-February. I think they'll be here before I know it-- I'm both excited AND nervous!

    Oh, and thanks for the Dr. Luke book recommendation. It's been really helpful!

Peace and Quiet

My girls spend a lot of time together.  Jude and Elie are inseparable for all the reasons associated with young twins and, apart from when she is in school, Vivi is home with them.  Vivi will often try to engage her sisters in her games which generally consist of bossing J&E around in the name of playing "school" or "dance class" or "summer camp." The problem is that Jude and Elie drive Vivi crazy.  They don't listen.  They don't follow her directions and even worse, they are full of their own ideas.  Oh, and sometimes they just. won't. stop. touching. her. stuff.  The few harmonious moments of sibling love quickly spiral into a three-way battle for control. What Is a Good Mother?

For the most part, I think I am a good mother.  I feed, clothe, and clean my children.  I tell them I love them.  I give them independence and encouragement.  I read to them and play games with them and drive them places.  I try to utilize positive reinforcement. Except when I don't.  There are times when I lose it.  When I throw a (plastic) plate across the kitchen because it is 8:00 at night and I told you it was bed time and not snack time.  When the whining is so insufferable that all I can do is shout "STOP IT NOW!!!!!!" at the top of my lungs so that I stun you into silence.  When I have to ask you for the tenth time to put the god-damned markers away because I am fed-up with scrubbing ink off the walls and floors.  When I tell you, "You know what?  I don't actually like that drawing." because I'm feeling spiteful that that you called dinner "disgusting."
